Title of Bulletin Board: R.A.T. (Race Against the Teachers)

Category: Fitness

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials: pictures of kids, cut out letters and a picture of a rat from Ratatouille

Description:

I encourage K - 6th graders to take home a R.A.T. calendar each month. On this calendar they keep track of the number of minutes each day they walk or run. I explained the R.A.T. program to the parents on the first day of school and stressed the importance of walking or running, taking no breaks, at least 15 minutes a day. We've been talking about ways to get our heart rate up and how important it is for our bodies. Each month I place a picture on the bulletin board of the students in each class who participated. I also write the total number of minutes each class participated. Each month every class that had more minutes than the teachers did will earn a game day in gym. At the end of the year I'd like to have a R.A.T. Run. Each child/teacher who participated in the program will run/walk 1 mile. I will invite parents and the student body to watch.

Additional Information:

I would like to find a sponsor and purchase t-shirts with the R.A.T. logo to award to the participants. Or, possibly, have a R.A.T. run at the end of the year and open it up to the community. They community members could purchase their own shirts, and maybe have enough money left over to buy shirts for the participants from my physical education classes.
